dual boot x64 vista seperate hdd s

Dual boot X64 and vista on seperate HDD's

I have an asus A8N-SLI deluxe mobo. i have X64 on my SATA drive and i have Vista on my IDE. it wont regonize that i have X64 on my SATA drive so it wont let me dual boot. but i can still pull files of my SATA. can you guys help me out

The boot configuration store is probably written on the PATA drive even though you installed Vista second (I assume). I read a thread elsewhere that said that for some reason Vista does that when both PATA and SATA drives are on the system. When there are only SATA drives the store is written to the XP Pro x64 root and the boot options screen appears.

I was referring to the multiple post but, not your main concern, which I answered separately. I don't know the best way to proceed with the boot issue.

You should have backed up all important information before even installing Vista, I imaged my drives to DVD media before I even installed Vista so I can restore my previous operating system if needed, however just like you I was installing as a dual boot. Backup what you can now.... you didn't consider the possible outcome of your actions.

Cskeller--you have a dual boot and you want to rescue XP. I would think you can try doing this if you have an XP CD--I would not be surprised if you don't have an XP CD but I hope that you do; and this is the reason for my continual Mantra about the bad position MSFT and OEMs place people in who have preinstalled OEM XPs and No CD and the parallel position they are going to put people in with respect to Win RE in Vista with OEM installations and no Retail Vista DVD::
1) Reboot and Boot to Recovery Console via the XP CD ROM. If you're not familiar with using the Recovery Console in XP--and frankly this is one of the few effective contexts I'd use it for see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us Scroll down to and follow: How To Use the Recovery Console
2) Start the Recovery Console per the Above article's directions. Make sure that first you boot tot he bios setup by using the appropriate key for your machine (for example F2 in and reset the boot order to put the XP CD in the #1 Position in bios setup. After doing this, put in the XP CD and restart and then when prompted, press R. Since you have only one XP OS enter 1 to select it when prompted. Enter the admin password or if none is set just hit enter.
3) Run Fixboot http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/bootcons_fixboot.mspx?mfr=true 4) Run Fixmbr to reset the Master Boot Record. Type Y and enter.
5) Exit the Recovery Console by hitting the exit key.
6) Reboot.
7) To remove the extra entry, edit the boot.ini file to remove the "Microsoft Windows Longhorn Entry"
8) Format the Vista partition from your XP drive by typing diskmgmt.msc into the run box and right clicking the drive you had Vista on.
9) Next time back up Windows XP and you should be able to easily do a dual boot again.

I have heard of cases where both PATA and SATA drives are used Vista writes the boot configuration store to the PATA drive even though it is not the boot drive. That means it is not on the XP root and the boot options screen does not appear.

See my two posts yesterday for Dual Boot - Two drives. Should work with your case too. You need the three files listed on the root of the drive you have Vista boot files on (your boot drive) the program Colin recommends to set up the legacy boot and the change in the boot.ini enumeration. You could change the boot order of your drives to boot to boot Sata first to test first. Either use Del or F8 to change on your mobo.

I have similiar I have XP Pro32 on my SATA and X64 XP Pro on my IDE.
Go into your BIOS ( NOT boot.ini etc - the Asus BIOS menu ) and set the boot order of disks - put first - whatever you want to use.
